Sustainability Leadership in the Nile Cruise Industry: Seizing Opportunities for a Greener Future!

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

Sailing along the majestic Nile River is a unique experience for travellers worldwide, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into Egypt's rich history. However, as our planet faces the escalating challenges of global warming, the need for sustainable practices becomes increasingly urgent. The Nile cruise industry, in particular, grapples with a significant obstacle—using diesel fuel, which contributes to carbon emissions and pollutes the Nile waters and air. It is crucial to address this issue and explore viable solutions to create a greener future for this iconic industry.

To comprehend the magnitude of this problem, we can refer to the joint regulations introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Transportation in 2010. These regulations set preliminary national fuel economy standards, establishing a reference of 10,180 grams of CO2 emissions per gallon of diesel consumed (Federal Register 2010). Since Nile ships consume approximately 12 tons of diesel per week, they produce around 100 tons of carbon emissions into the air. With this understanding of the scale of the problem, we must now delve into appropriate solutions.

Some might argue that the government should mandate boat owners to offset carbon emissions by greening the desert and sequestering carbon in the land. However, this approach is flawed as it would inadvertently increase carbon emissions and authorize the pollution of Nile waters. Instead, we should focus on actively reducing carbon emissions through sustainable means and only offsetting the remaining unavoidable emissions.

Fortunately, the Nile cruise industry currently finds itself in a favourable position due to various factors such as increased demand, high prices, and available liquidity. These factors present invaluable opportunities for Nile cruise owners to renew their boats and embrace clean practices that reduce carbon emissions. By doing so, Egypt can continue to promote this iconic product while aligning with the global shift towards sustainability, which may soon result in mandatory regulations governing clean travel.

Another reason to embrace sustainable practices is the decision made by the Luxor and Aswan Governorate to establish berths outside the city, aiming to reduce emissions within urban areas. This initiative presents another opportunity wherein the government can provide a clean source of electricity at these berths for use when the boats are not sailing, which accounts for approximately half of the voyage duration. Implementing this measure could result in substantial fuel savings of approximately 50%.

Here are some recommended practices based on the extent of desired renovations, particularly for older boats affected by the stagnation of tourism or lack of maintenance due to global and local crises:

1. ECO-FRIENDLY PAINTS: Replace harmful organic paints containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with marine, water-based paints. These paints emit fewer VOCs, eliminate harmful solvents, and reduce air pollution and health risks. They also offer corrosion resistance, making them a safer and more sustainable choice for the environment and public health.

2. ECO-LOCAL FURNITURE FOR NILE CRUISE SHIPS: Opt for responsibly sourced wood with sustainable replanting practices. Consider furniture made from recycled plastic or aluminium. Utilize bamboo and rattan, sustainable plant fibres, instead of potentially harmful materials. Choose furniture that incorporates ways to reduce waste, such as using leftover parts from trimmings.

3. HIGH-ENERGY EFFICIENCY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES: Reduce electricity consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by selecting appliances with the Energy Efficient Label. Minimize water and electricity usage during laundry with Energy Efficient-labeled machines. Consider devices like TVs, computers, and air conditioners with smart timers that automatically conserve energy when not used. Replace traditional bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs for lower energy consumption and longer lifespan. Install low-flow showerheads and kitchen faucets to conserve water on the cruise ship.

4. EMBRACE CLEAN & RENEWABLE ENERGY: Incorporate solar panels on Nile cruise ships to generate electricity from the sun, powering devices such as lighting. Equip the ships to receive external energy sources when not sailing, enabling potential savings of up to 50% in fossil fuel consumption. This proactive measure significantly reduces emissions and pollution.

5. DIGITIZE PROCESSES: Replace manual and paper-based processes with digital alternatives. Utilize electronic forms, online documentation, and digital communication channels to minimize the need for physical publications, reducing waste and promoting efficiency.

6. IMPLEMENT HYDROPONIC CULTIVATION: Utilize available space on the boat to implement hydroponic cultivation, focusing on leafy greens. This sustainable practice promotes water efficiency and enhances the ship's aesthetic appeal while providing nutrient-rich produce.

7. USE ORGANIC COTTON BEDDING AND NATURAL COLORS: Opt for organic cotton bedding, grown without harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, reducing the negative impact of traditional cotton production. Organic cotton bedding is free from harmful chemicals, improving air quality and ensuring well-being. Using organic cotton bedding, we promote sustainable farming practices and support environmentally friendly methods.

The Nile cruise industry can sail towards a sustainable future by adopting these recommended practices. The world is strongly heading towards sustainability, and we must act now before it is too late. Mandatory laws may soon be issued by tourism-exporting countries to prevent the sale of tourism products that do not meet the necessary standards of sustainability and environmental preservation. Through these efforts, we can positively impact our environment, communities, and the tourism sector. Let us join hands and work towards a greener and more responsible Nile cruise industry that not only preserves the area's natural beauty but also sets a model for sustainable tourism worldwide. Together, we can make a difference! 🚢🌱 #Sustainability #Tourism #NileCruise #RenewableEnergy #GreenHospitalityTop of Form
