Nevertheless, sustainability experts such as Vicky Smith and Justin Francis have expressed their reservations about carbon offsetting. They argue that the use of carbon offsets may lack transparency and credibility, raising concerns about the true effectiveness of such projects. There is a fear that carbon offsetting might be employed as a mere facade to justify environmentally harmful practices.
However, as firm proponents of sustainability, we advocate for a third approach that combines emissions reduction with carbon offsets as a last resort to compensate for unavoidable emissions. Nevertheless, before resorting to offsets, our primary focus lies in designing tourism experiences that minimize emissions by utilizing eco-friendly transportation, offering locally sustainable accommodations, and maximizing local income.
In our unwavering pursuit of sustainability with integrity and transparency, we have established partnerships with renowned organizations. We collaborate with the SEKEM Group, the oldest environmentally friendly community in Egypt since 1977, and the esteemed Carbon Footprint Center at Heliopolis University to meticulously verify unavoidable emissions. With the support of the Egypt Biodynamic Association for Organic Agriculture Demeter Egypt, which plays a pivotal role in certifying the economy and benefits 45,000 small farmers engaged in organic farming in the desert, we allocate our carbon offsets to initiatives that foster sustainable development and enhance the well-being of individuals within local communities.
Crucially, we prioritize complete transparency, allowing anyone interested to scrutinize our actions for any wrongdoing. We take pride in our commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that our support reaches deserving beneficiaries through reputable associations. By championing local communities, particularly those involved in farming, we prioritize economic and social sustainability within these regions.
By placing a strong emphasis on transparency and rigorous verification of carbon offset utilization, we can effectively monitor and evaluate the impact of these projects. This ensures that support reaches those who truly benefit, alleviating concerns about manipulative practices or the misuse of carbon offsets for illicit purposes.
