Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi might not immediately come to mind for island-hopping, but the cosmopolitan capital of the United Arab Emirates is actually an archipelago of over 200 islands, many of which are open to visitors.

The islands near downtown Abu Dhabi offer diverse experiences to suit all tastes. Whether you're seeking luxury and glamour or family-friendly fun, local lifestyle influencer Tania AbuZeid Dahbour knows the best spots for nightlife and keeping kids entertained across the capital’s islands.

From the best dining and nightlife to stunning sunsets, Tania AbuZeid shares her insider tips, and dispels some misconceptions about modern culture and nightlife in Abu Dhabi. Here’s why she believes her hometown is perfect for fun nights out, romantic dates, and raising a family.

What’s the vibe like in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi comprises numerous islands, including the downtown area, where most companies have their offices in high-rise buildings along the expansive Corniche, offering magnificent views. Surrounding the downtown area are several islands like Yas Island, Al Reem Island, and Saadiyat Island, each with its own distinct vibe. The beauty of Abu Dhabi is its variety, and it's easy to travel from one island to another by taxi, ride-share, or public transportation.

You’ve traveled all over the world – what makes Abu Dhabi different?

For me, it’s the fact that Abu Dhabi has something for everyone. It retains elements of the old Abu Dhabi, particularly in its historical areas, while also offering amazing nightlife. The city has evolved tremendously over the past 50 years, offering activities for all types of travelers.

Does it remind you of other parts of the world?

Abu Dhabi is incredibly international due to its large expat population, bringing influences from all over the world. On Al Maryah Island, you can enjoy fine dining at places like Zuma for Japanese cuisine, Coya for Peruvian food, or something more relaxed like Loca for Mexican fare.

You spent some time living in Canada. How does it compare?

I moved to Canada for my bachelor’s degree but was born and raised in Abu Dhabi. While I love Canada, I always felt a pull back to Abu Dhabi, possibly because of the weather. I was in Ottawa, and the nightlife there doesn’t compare to Abu Dhabi's current scene.

Describe the nightlife in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi has significantly improved its nightlife offerings. For a fun night out, Yas Island is the place to go, with numerous bars, clubs, and lounges. Yas Bay is a favorite spot for starting with dinner and then bar hopping. Many restaurants have DJs, and people often start dancing during dinner. Venues like The Trilogy by Buddha-Bar feature go-go dancers and fire shows, making it a favorite of mine for bites, drinks, and shows on weekends.

Any misconceptions you’d like to clear up?

Abu Dhabi is much like other parts of the world. You can wear dresses and heels at clubs or bikinis at the beach. The only exceptions are traditional places like mosques, where conservative dress is required. Despite the conservative reputation, drinking alcohol is accepted in Abu Dhabi as long as it's not in public areas. It’s the only emirate in the UAE where you can buy alcohol from liquor stores without a license.

What local delicacies must visitors definitely try?

Karak tea is a popular local drink, a sweet milk tea made with saffron, giving it a unique golden color and flavor. Emiratis use saffron in many dishes. Abu Dhabi is also known for its fresh fish. In Al Mina, the harbor area has a market where you can buy fresh fish like sea bream and hamour at great prices. The area is well-preserved and retains its old charm. There are also numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood.

You’re a mom – is Abu Dhabi family-friendly?

Abu Dhabi is an excellent place to raise children, being one of the safest cities in the world. You can leave your car unlocked without worry. The city offers great beaches, year-round good weather, and family-friendly restaurants. There are also waterparks, skating rinks, arcade games, and bowling alleys where kids are welcome.

Where’s a good place to go on a date?

Abu Dhabi is quite romantic. Hakkasan at Emirates Palace is a favorite for date nights with its great Asian food and beautiful patio, perfect during cooler winter months. The view of the Abu Dhabi skyline and the DJ playing lounge music create a charming atmosphere.

Where else can you get a great view in Abu Dhabi?

For a 360-degree view of the city, head to Ray’s Bar on the 62nd floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers hotel. It’s one of the tallest buildings in Abu Dhabi.

Tell us about your most epic experience in Abu Dhabi.

My favorite time in Abu Dhabi is November, during the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit. The event attracts people from all over and features concerts and parties day and night. Last year, we started with brunch at Iris lounge on Yas Island, watched the races, and enjoyed the DJ and packed venue. The day ended with evening concerts, making it one of my most memorable experiences. Abu Dhabi during Formula One season is simply the best time of year.
